"Mom? Can you wake up now?"
His warm sleepy breath caressed my cheek as I lifted my head off of my pillow and tried to rub a short night of sleep from my eyes.
"Can I take a shower, Mom?" My early riser padded into the master bath and dropped his baseball pjs to the ground. I turned on the hot water and watched the shower door disappear beneath a blanket of steam.
I shuffled to the sink in search of my toothbrush and prayed for an extra measure of energy to face the day still wrapped in darkness.
Lord? Do you hear me? I'm gonna need something supernatural to make it through this day. You know I was up all night with a screaming toddler and all I really want to do is slip back into bed. If it weren't for my brown-haired buddy standing under that stream of water, I would just hide under my covers today...
I saw his skinny form dancing behind a shroud of steam,. Wet head bobbing, dripping fingers strumming an air guitar, my littlest boy broke through morning's silence with an offering of monotone praise. Familiar tune. New lyrics:
YES! That's the book for me!
I stand alone on the Word of God....
I listened as my crooner made a joyful noise. And then I thanked the Lord for the humorous reminder before sunrise.
I turned off the water and handed my early-morning singer a towel. Then we headed for our favorite reading chair where we often begin our day. Sandwiched between Genesis and Revelation, we found truth to feed our souls. And it tasted even better than a bacon, lettuce, and tomato specialty.
The sun began to poke its sleepy orange head through the gray, and I thanked the Lord for his sustenance for the day to come. I wasn't sure what the upcoming hours would hold, but perhaps I could find time to teach my youngest son how to spell the title of our favorite book.... The B-I-B-L-E. And then, once we mastered the spelling, we'd add a joyful noise!
